Workers' comp that keeps your crew and your contracts safe
Required for most Maine employers, and priced by payroll and job classification. Getting those classifications right is where we save clients the most.
Pricing depends on payroll and class codes. Sample figures for illustration.
How we approach workers' compensation coverage
Workers' compensation pays medical bills and lost wages when an employee is hurt on the job, and it protects the employer from most lawsuits over workplace injuries. Maine requires coverage for nearly all employers with one or more employees, with limited exceptions.
Premium is based on payroll within each job classification. Misclassified payroll, such as office staff coded as field labor, is one of the most common reasons small businesses overpay. We review classifications, experience modification factors and audit results each year so your premium reflects your actual operations.
How a quote comes together
Most workers' compensation quotes take one conversation and a day or two of comparison.

Payroll by class
We break payroll into accurate job classifications.
Experience review
We check your experience modification factor and prior claims.
Market the policy
Voluntary market carriers and the Maine Employers' Mutual option are compared.
Audit preparation
We help you prepare records before the annual premium audit.
What moves the price
These factors carry the most weight with the carriers we represent. We explain each one on your quote.
Class codes
Roofing and logging rates are far higher than clerical rates.
Payroll
Premium is calculated per $100 of payroll in each class.
Experience mod
A mod below 1.00 lowers premium; above 1.00 raises it.
Safety programs
Documented safety programs can earn credits with some carriers.
Subcontractors
Uninsured subcontractors can be added to your audit.

Workers' compensation questions
In most cases, yes. Maine requires coverage for most employers regardless of hours, with limited exceptions for certain agricultural and seasonal workers.
At the end of the policy term, the carrier reviews actual payroll and adjusts the premium up or down.
Sole proprietors without employees are generally not required to cover themselves, though general contractors may require proof or a waiver.
