Boat & marine coverage

How we approach boat & marine coverage

Boats are excluded or barely covered on most homeowners policies. A dedicated boat policy covers the hull, engine and equipment, plus liability for injuries and property damage on the water, fuel spill cleanup, towing and salvage, which can be expensive in Maine waters.

We wrote our first marine policies for Casco Bay lobstermen in 1964. Today we insure sailboats, cruisers, center consoles and commercial fishing vessels. We look at navigation limits, lay-up periods, mooring gear and whether the boat is stored on land for the winter, all of which affect price.

How a quote comes together

Most boat & marine quotes take one conversation and a day or two of comparison.

  1. Boat details

Year, make, length, engine, value and any recent survey.

  2. Where and when

Mooring or slip, navigation area and lay-up months.

  3. Choose valuation

Agreed value or actual cash value, explained with examples.

  4. Marine carrier comparison

Specialty marine carriers quote the same coverage.

What moves the price

These factors carry the most weight with the carriers we represent. We explain each one on your quote.

  • Boat type and speed

High-performance boats cost more than sailboats and trawlers.

  • Age and survey

Older hulls may require a recent survey and actual cash value terms.

  • Navigation area

Coastal waters beyond Casco Bay may widen territory and price.

  • Boating experience

Safety courses and years of experience earn credits.

  • Storage

Winter storage on land usually reduces premium.

Boat & marine questions

Usually only small boats with low horsepower, and often with very low limits. A separate boat policy is recommended for almost any powered boat or sailboat.

You and the insurer agree on the boat's value when the policy starts. After a total loss, that amount is paid without depreciation.

Carriers often require one for boats over a certain age or value. We can suggest surveyors along the Maine coast.

Mooring gear can often be added as equipment. Damage your boat causes to another vessel is covered by liability.
